As the 21st session of the Conference of Parties

The 21st session of the Conference of Parties (COP21) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) ended on a positive note as the participating member states agreed on a new climate change agreement.

The main goal of the Paris conference was to achieve a global agreement to keep global warming below the critical threshold of 2°C of warming. In a significant move, the member states agreed to limit global warming to under 1.5°C of pre-industrial levels

With the planet already warming up at a rapid pace, achieving this goal requires the commitment of both developed and developing countries. Therefore, the Paris discussions also focused closely on national commitments to reduce greenhouse gases. In addition, discussions also focused on the role of larger economies and the developed states in supporting the sustainable development efforts of the poorer and more vulnerable countries.

You can of course learn more about the Paris climate agreement here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-35092127

Yet, while world leaders and environmental experts deliberated in Paris, what’s in this conference for you?

The effects of climate change are felt all over the world. Extreme heat wave, droughts and floods continue to impact lives and livelihoods across the world. Rising sea levels are seriously impacting the lives of coastal residents, with the poorest communities expected to be the most hard hit.

As we set to mark the beginning of yet another New Year, why not make a new commitment to do our bit for the planet – to help preserve it not just for us, but also for the future generations?

Here’s what we plan to do at CoirGreen:

We’ve made a conscious effort to go-green this season.

We’ve asked our employees to make a ‘green’ wish-list (we’re not asking for much here, this wish-list can include even the simplest, like reusing grocery bags!).

We’ve sticking up ‘green-tips’ across our office space, and once again, they are as simple as ‘switching off lights at the end of the day’.

Next year, we plan to share more information about environment-friendly living through our blog, because we believe that the more we know about how our actions impact the planet, the more we are willing to act!

Tackling greenhouse gas emissions – an urgent issue of our time

December 2014 began with world leaders and environmental experts from over 190 countries gathering in Lima, Peru, deliberating on measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, thereby addressing one of the most urgent needs of our time, climate change

A landmark event, the 20th session of the Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) called on countries present at the occasion to set up national commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The Conference also set the foundation for a new climate action agreement which will be finalized in 2015 in Paris. The new climate action agreement will come into operation in 2020 setting limits to reduce overall global emissions that will keep the earth’s temperatures within a safe range. In addition, the Lima conference also highlighted the need to address deforestation to combat climate change, with countries pledging to plant 20 million hectares of trees.

The earth’s rising temperatures, most often brought about by the release of greenhouse gasses resulting from various activities such as deforestation and the burning of fossil fuels, continue to pose a threat to people’s daily lives. It also hinders development and harms the environment around us. Not only that, climate change also poses a challenge to the future generations to survive on this planet.

We at CoirGreen are committed to protecting the environment not just for the current generation but also for the future of this world. With that at the heart of everything we do, the products we supply are natural, environmentally-friendly and 100% biodegradable. While ensuring high quality of the products, we spend a lot of time making sure our products or actions have minimum harm on the environment. We also promote sustainable lifestyles and practices.

At CoirGreen, we truly believe that protecting the environment is indeed an urgent need of our time, and we need to act now.

The Environment is Our Lifeblood at CoirGreen

“When we heal the Earth, we heal ourselves”. These wise words were uttered by a distinguished professor of Environmental Studies in the United States, David. W. Orr.

We live in a time when the insufferable arrogance of man has laid waste to the most beautiful planet in the solar system. The current statistics regarding the Earth’s environment portray a scary picture. The worlds rain forests could completely vanish in a hundred years at the current rate of deforestation. Since 1500, more than 800 species of plants and animals have gone extinct. Climate-related deaths will double in 25 years according to a 2005 report from the World Health Organization. Climate change is already tied to 150,000 deaths globally every single year. Scientists predict a 6 foot rise in the global sea level and global warming has become a reality with 8 of the warmest years ever recorded occurring after 1998.

These stats underscore the importance of taking every effort to preserve our planet. At Coir Green(tm) we have always been driven to create products that are environmentally sustainable. And since our inception we wanted to be a responsible company and be an example to the wider society.

At the heart of all CoirGreen(TM), products is coir, the coconut fibre found between the husk and the outer shell of the coconut. The use of coir has several environmental benefits. Coir fibre comes from an entirely renewable source and is a by-product from an established industry where it was formerly regarded as a waste product. It uses water more economically and is an ideal soil improver.

“The importance of coir can be stated quite simply. You can escape from a burning building with a rope made of coconut fiber, you can garden using coconut fibers and you can sleep on a mattress stuffed with comfortable coir.”

Adding to the above quote, we can also say that products made from coir safeguard the soil, nourishes our gardens and protects the environment.

Coir is also a viable alternative to peat moss. Peat moss bogs are a non-renewable resource and they provide habitat for a distinctive flora and fauna. Removing the peat moss destroys this environment and it takes centuries to recover. A recent article in the Guardian endorsed coir as a good alternative to peat moss and recommended its usage in British gardens. In fact, the historical Kew Gardens in London used coir as a growing medium during the early 19th century. And when researchers at Auburn University and University of Arkansas compared peat and coir as soil amendments for horticulture they found that coir performed on par with peat.

At CoirGreen(TM), we produce a variety of coir related products. Our coir products are made for the horticultural, agricultural and the erosion control industries. Erosion control blankets, Coirlogs (Waterlogs/Biologs), Geotextiles (Coir netting), coir pallets (Coir Pillows), coco peat, coir disks(weed control mats), coir pots and Growbags are some of our products. All CoirGreen products are environmentally friendly and completely biodegradable. Our products are also 100% natural and chemical free.

CoirGreen’s ultimate goal is to be an ambassador for the environment by promoting the use of environmentally sustainable products. We spend an enormous amount of energy in making sure that our products do not harm the environment in anyway. CoirGreen(TM) is nurtured by the environment and the coconut tree that gives life to our company. The environment is our lifeblood and we believe that it is our duty to take care of it.

CoirGreen - Your Environmentally Friendly Company

Being a friend to the environment is becoming an ever increasing priority and responsibility among everyone today. Companies especially are taking on the environmentally friendly persona so that the challenges and demands of our rapidly changing world are met. Companies such as CoirGreen(TM), manufactures and supplies products that are considered 100% organic for Erosion, Horticulture and Agriculture industries. CoirGreen(TM) develops a wide range of natural products that are to the highest industrial standards. Its biodegradable and environmentally sustainable products are made out of an important commercial product obtained from the husk of the coconut, Coir Fiber.

With a reputation for being a far more superior natural ingredient than any other, Coir Fiber is a useful commercial product among professionals in various industries. Widely known for its ability to reduce soil erosion and assist the horticulture and agriculture sectors due to its hard structural fibers. Coir can be found between the husk and the outer shell of a coconut. When immature they are pale but subsequently it becomes harder and yellow as a layer of lining begins to form on their walls. There are two varieties of coir; Brown coir is harvested from fully ripened coconuts that contain more lignin and less cellulose. This makes the coir stronger but less flexible. While the white coir fibers are harvested from the coconuts before they are ripe. These fibers are much smoother and finer but are also weaker.

Nurseries, Greenhouses, Farms and even households are seen using Coir products as a growing medium. It increases the capacity to hold water which remains available at low tensions and it maintains air porosity even after saturated with pore space allowing the water to drain easily. For horticultural purposes CoirGreen(TM) produces Coco Peat, Growbags and Husk Chips where it can be added into potting mixtures adding value to the soil. With this, the growth of finer roots within a short period of time can be seen in the plants. Coir disks on the other hand are used for natural weed control and used mainly in large scale nurseries and green houses. Grow Bags and Coir Pots is specifically used for growing vegetable and flower plants and can be used even in your own home.

CoirGreen(TM) also manufactures products for erosion control. Erosion is inevitable in our environment. Usually occurring because of wind, water or ice; by down slope creep of soil and other materials under the force of gravity or by animals and humans. 40% of the world’s agricultural land is degraded. Fertile soil is lost in large amounts due to drought, deforestation and climate change. According to studies increased rainfall amounts and intensities will lead to higher rates of erosion. Generally, soil erosion is being controlled with a physical barrier such as vegetation or rock to prevent water or wind creating a soil loss. However now you can use CoirGreen’s products designed and manufactured specifically for the purpose of soil erosion. Erosion Control Blankets (coconut blankets), GeoTextiles (Coir netting), Coirlogs (waterlogs/Biologs), Coir Pallets (coir pillows) and Jute products are all produced by CoirGreen to help prevent the erosion of soil. Erosion Control Blankets which are made out of coir are known to have a high performance as it does not rot, needs no chemical treatment and is hard and strong which provides adequate strength to prevent slope from erosion, provides landslide stabilisation and river bank protection. It can be easily transported and expected to become part of the soils structure as it’s steadily set in place. Ideal for landscaping, vegetation control and sediment control. Coir logs or also known as Biologs or Waterlogs are a cylinder round shaped netting packed with coir fiber (also come in square shape logs). It is used mainly for stream bank stabilization, shoreline protection, wetland mitigation, channel edge liner, wild life habitats and landscaping. This too is easy to install, allows for deep rooting of plants while providing nutrients and can be customised to your specific requirements. Another cost-effective method is the use of Coir Pallet or Coir Pillows especially for establishing marginal vegetation around lakes edges and watercourse banks. The high lining in the product is able to tolerate high energy of water flows and has a long degradation period of 3-5 years.

A family business, Coir Green’s goal is to value its employees and customers and at the same time to be an ambassador for the protection of our environment by using environmentally sustainable products. A tremendous effort is made to provide their partners and customers products of the highest quality because the company is keen to meet their every need. Their greatest asset, their employees, ensures that every product goes under strict quality control methodologies.
